Scarlet Fever – OK, so according to the book today’s drink is commemorating the publishing of the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorn but they got it wrong, as I shouldn’t have to point out, the drink is called Scarlet Fever, not Letter… So what should a drink named Scarlet Fever make you think of? A once deadly disease characterized by a sore throat, fever, rash…? WRONG! The only thing that should come to mind when you hear the words “Scarlet Fever” is the greatest pop country musician of all time, heck, why stop there? The greatest musician of all time, the amazing Kenny Rogers! And why should scarlet fever make you think of the silver tongued god of the microphone? Because Kenny sings a song called Scarlet Fever… what’s the song about you ask? The adulteress who was forced to wear the letter “A” as a badge of shame? A once deadly rash causing disease? No, nothing as shameful or disgusting as that. This is Kenny Rogers we’re talking about, the smooth voice of countless love songs. Scarlet Fever is the story of an old creepy guy who’s got the hots for a 16 year old stripper named Scarlet… c’mon!
How can you get Scarlet Fever?*
- 1 oz vodka
- 1 oz white rum
- ½ oz dry gin
- 6 oz cranberry juice
- 1 lemon slice
Drink Tip: Not sure what things were like back in Kenny’s days but I wouldn’t go around offering this drink to any 16 year old girls!
*I changed the recipe on this drink. In the book the drink recipe called for 12 ounces of vodka, 12 ounces of rum, and 6 ounces of gin... not only do I not have a glass big enough for a drink that size but I don't think it's humanly possible to knock back a drink with 40 ounces of hard alcohol without either blacking out before you could finish it or dying of alcohol poisoning! I thought maybe the book was mistaken but every recipe for this drink that I found online had the same exact measurements...? If anyone knows anything about this, let me know...
